Our powder coating addition can maintain its finish up to 15-20 years on our metal fences, depending on pre-treatment and the type of powder. Its resistance to weather, corrosion and chemicals makes powder coating a more durable finish than paint or other liquid coatings.

How Powder-Coating is Treated

Preparing the formula is the most important process for  getting maximum life out of your powder coat. Because the powder particles are electrostatically charged onto the surface, it’s important for that surface to be clean for proper adherence. Most preparation includes stripping any existing coating and corrosion and cleaning the bare metal.
If the substrate is prepared poorly or not at all, your powder coat may chip easily resulting in a short life.

Durability of Each Type
There are various types of powder-coating available for a range of applications:

Epoxy - Extremely durable and excellent resistance to corrosion and chemicals. Best used indoors, as sun and weather can cause fading and deterioration within a matter of months. We recommend the use of epoxy primers as the first step in the two-coat process. When coupled with a UV stable top coat this combination will ensure your coating project lasts for years.
Polyester - One of the most commonly used powders, polyesters have a large selection of colors and glosses. Great for interior and exterior applications.  Highly durable chemistries offer good resistance to chemicals, corrosion and UV weathering.
Fluoropolymers - Superior weathering capabilities allow fluoropolymer powders to retain gloss and colors very well. They are also resistant to corrosion and are an excellent choice for outdoor applications. Warranties up to 20 years are available when applied to specific surfaces by a certified applicator.
Urethanes - Because the base polymer in both urethane and polyester powders are very similar, urethane powder has most of the same characteristics of polyester. It can resist chemicals slightly better and has excellent matting ability. Urethane powders are slightly harder, which can result in less flexibility. This improved performance generally means urethane powders are more expensive than polyester powders.

Thanks for helping me understand the benefits of powder coating a metal fence. My friend is thinking of installing a metal fence on his property and he's curious if there's a way to protect it. I find it amazing to learn that you can add polyester to it, and it could provide a glossy aesthetic while providing a durability bonus to the metal. I'll share this with him and suggest that he look for a steelwork service that offers powder coating.
