Etiquette of Fence Installation: Who Gets What?

When you install a new fence, you often have more to think of than just yourself.  Most times the fence is shared with a neighbor or other neighboring business.  Let's go over the general rules of fence etiquette we encourage customers to keep in mind before installing a fence!

Ensure Property Lines are Clearly Laid Out
Many of us don't exactly know where our property ends & our neighbors begin. It's always a good idea to check your property's plat- a drawing that maps the land you own.  If you can't locate the plat, you can typically get one for free from the county records office.  If this route fails, you can fire a land surveyor to clarify the borders of your property.
Connect with Your Neighbors
Never a bad idea in general, but especially when the issue of property lines comes to the forefront.  You never quite know what your neighbor's plat says & it's a good idea to confirm this before starting a project.  After so, it's a great common courtesy to confide in your neighbors before starting a home project that they will be running along their property.   We've even seen situations where neighbors both are considering fence installations & decide to split the costs after discussing with each other!
Face Finished Fence Side Toward a Neighbor
Some types of fences have a finished (good) side and a one that is less smooth with posts showing.  In general, the finished side of the fence should face your neighbor- though our fence's typically have two equally smooth sides!   Not only will your property look a lot better with the finished side facing the outside world, but your neighbors or cars on the road will appreciate the beauty & thoughtfulness of leaving the best side for public eyes.  The double-sides fences we install are created using 'sandwich construction', making each side equally smooth & also providing more strength.
Work to Maintain Your Fence
You want your fence to look how it does after installation for years to come.  Maintaining a vinyl or metal fence requires just a tiny bit of maintenance throughout each year to maintain this high aesthetic level.  This benefits you, as well as your neighbors, who share the aesthetics of the fence and likely won't feel it's their right or obligation to provide any maintenance to your fence.    Luckily, wood fences require the most maintenance & that is why Salt Lake Fence Company specializes in vinyl & metal installations.

Following these guidelines in the fence installation process will help you to feel secure while keeping your neighbors happy.  Who doesn't want a peaceful neighborhood.

I'm glad you mentioned how it's important to define your property's area from your neighbor's when it comes to installing a fence. My wife and I just moved into another house, and we want to install a fence to keep our dogs safe. We haven't introduced ourselves to our neighbors yet, and after reading your piece, we think it's time to do so. Thanks for the tips about fence installation etiquette.

Do you know where your property starts and closes—and would you say you are quite certain about that? It's a smart thought to check your home's plat, which is a drawing that guides out your property. On the off chance that you've lost this report, you might have the option to get it liberated from your province's records office. You can likewise employ a land assessor to explain the boundaries of your property. Also, an assessor can put stakes along the limit, giving you a more clear thought of precisely where your fence can go.

Given your fence is unquestionably inside your property lines and agrees with neighborhood guidelines, you may not really be needed to converse with your neighbors about it. In any case, it's basic civility to ask—and it could save you future legitimate difficulty on the off chance that it turns out your neighbor needs to question your fence. In addition, if it will be a divider between your yards, that could really be something your neighbor is thinking about, as well! You may find that you and your neighbor can team up on the task—and split the expense.

Knowing your property line is very important. With the recent storm damage in our area, many common objects that had been used to mark property lines have been damaged, so it has been a challenge for some people when replacing their fences.

Thanks for pointing out that we should check our property's drawing that maps the land we own to clarify the borders of our farm. My husband and I have a huge farm and we need to protect and secure our horses and sheep. I guess we should look for fencing contractors on Monday who can install wood fencing around our lot within three days.

If you're erecting a fence with backer rails, you should face your neighbor on the "good side." It's just the right thing to do. It's also the accepted practice. If you faced the "good side" in, your fence would be facing backwards. Do you want a piece of the "good side," or are you splitting the fence expense with a neighbor and need to make a compromise? One alternative is to change the direction in which the panel faces. This distributes the good and the not-so-good equally between you and your neighbor. Another alternative is to build a fence that is amicable to your neighbors.

For fencing companies it is their protocol, though it differs to the service they are called for.

Pressure treated fence posts come in both round and square shapes. Lengths generally vary from 6' to 12' long. Why so long? If you are installing a 6' fence you will need to bury at least 3 feet in the ground to support it.

I didn't know that vinyl was an option. My old fence is cracking. I'll have to have something sturdier put in its place.

Thank you for mentioning that a vinyl or metal fence only needs a minimal amount of upkeep throughout the course of each year to keep it at this high aesthetic level. My sister is remodeling her yard and intends to install vinyl fencing. I'll advise her to keep up with annual maintenance in order to keep the aesthetic.
